Genie Group launches Mobile Broadband

Broadband genie has launched a new variant of it's price comparison and user review product, focussing in particular on mobile broadband from a range of UK providers.

These packages have come on a long way since I last used them and now mostly using the 3G networks to get you 1meg + easily from a simple USB dongle or card to go into your laptop. For me, it's handy when going away for a few days when I'm not sure if I'll be near any wireless hotspots.

Personally - I like Vodafone's offering.

Tivo UK

A highly overlooked brilliant piece of kit. The way Sky+ should have been.

I've had my Tivo box for over three years now and while they still make them in the US, the UK has only a limited supply in circulation via ebay.

I hook it up to my Virgin Media set-top box and it let's me record and playback shows via the digital hard disk, and let's me pause live TV. It also lets me vote for content I like and don't like and helps recommend new shows. Imagine it as a more intelligent Sky+ box.

I haven't watched live tv in about two years now as if it's not recorded by Tivo then it's not worth watching.

Highly recommend it.

Macbook Pro Major Issues & Appalling Apple Customer Service

More and more customers are surfacing with early Macbook Pro issues to do with whining noises and battery power issues. Apple are still not officially confirming it or indeed doing ANYTHING to help.

My Macbook is one of the first ordered in Feb and last week started making funny whining noises and the battery refuses to charge properly or work longer than 10 minutes when unplugged.

Took it to a "Genius" at the Apple Store in Regent Street who confirmed it has those problems and that you are better off getting a replacement rather than having to wait 6 weeks for it to "potentially" be repaired, if at all.

Speaking to customer relations for the online apple store in the UK / Ireland (where I bought it) has resulted in one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had and I am appalled by their reaction. I spent over an hour on the phone with a guy (Marcus) who:

refused to believe there was a problem and did not accept the "Genius" apple tech guy as being qualified to make that judgement

wanted me to take the machine to a qualified apple repairer who would then send it away for X weeks with no replacement in the meantime

could not guarantee they could actually fix the problem

refused my request to send a courier with a new Macbook Pro to my house which we then swapped for the old one (would be the most sensible!)

would not put me in touch with his manager or anyone more senior!

Needless to say that I would be extremely wary about buying either the Macbook or Macbook Pro right now unless you were sure it would not develop any problems, as you don't want to have to call Apple Support!

As for me, I guess I will keep calling until I speak to someone more sensible and write a formal letter of complaint to the UK MD.

Either way - am I the only person here to think that all Apple cares about is selling you machines at high prices, and anyone getting a problem gets the official line of "Tough!"...?

Apple Order Fraud - Security Breach!

Well I've given Apple enough time to try and respond to this and made numerous calls, but once again their customer service has been frankly appalling. I will be interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same experience and had their order breached.

In a nutshell, a stranger managed to send an email into Apple on my pre-order worth £2,000+ and change the delivery address to their own!! No security check - just an email and quoting my account number (which I assume they worked out by trial and error). I only noticed this when I checked over the despatch email from Apple, but the address could not be changed back until the last minute when it arrived in the UK.

I have the log, and thus proof, of how this happened from the customer support team but no-one at Apple will give me a straightfoward answer to how this happened and if anyone else would be affected by this fraudulent scam.

I'm hoping this was just a one-off innocent mistake - but quite a high value mistake to make - and what if it wasn't and this has happened before and could happen again to other customers?

Postbox Spam

A thought came to me today while I was happily playing away on the xbox 360 in my front room, when for the 15th time this week a piece of junk mail arrived through the letterbox. If I see another pizza offer, crappy local newspaper, or an announcment about a new chinese round the corner, I'll scream!

So it got me thinking. We have had spam filters on our emails for years now and they get increasingly more sophisticated to let your good mail through and keep the bad ones at bay. Now, why can't this be applied to a normal in-the-door letterbox? Something which is an internet connected sensor that can be programmed (and the information shared) to block the crap mail and let the postman through!

All it needs is the Royal Mail to have unique code sensor that automatically unlocks the letterbox when the postman is delivering an item but refuses to open for the junk mail people.

So - anyone fancy starting a new company called "Postbox Spam" Ltd?

After working for another company for a couple of years, I finally took some time out to recharge the batteries and get ready for another big adventure.
